Government commits just over $8.5 million to Ngāmotu Marae
Ngāti Te Whiti and the Ngāmotu Marae Reservation Trust are celebrating an $8.5 million Government funding commitment towards the construction and completion of Ngāmotu Marae.
Minister for Māori Development Hon Tama Potaka announced the funding at Te Rā Whakamaumahara Ō Tā Māui Pōmare, held at Ōwae Marae in Waitara on Saturday 27 June.
The funding will enable the project to progress from the Stage 1 civil and infrastructure works currently under way into Stage 2, being the construction of the wharenui, wharekai and ablution block and all of the remaining works required to complete the marae.
The Government’s commitment builds on $9.2 million already promised by project partners and supporters.
Ngāmotu Marae Reservation Trust Chair Shelton Healey says the announcement is a major milestone for Ngāti Te Whiti and everyone who has supported the project.
“We are over the moon, but above all, deeply humbled and grateful. This commitment gives our people confidence that a vision carried for generations can now become a reality.
“It recognises the dedication of our Trustees, whānau, partners and supporters, and the importance of Ngāmotu Marae to the cultural, social and economic future of our city and region.”
Ngāmotu Marae will provide a cultural home for Ngāti Te Whiti and a city marae where all people are welcome.
